Insurance & Practical Info
Claiming Your Consultation
I am a Registered Clinical Nutritionist with Clinical Nutritionists Aotearoa (CNA). CNA is a professional body recognised by Southern Cross Health Insurance, NIB Health Insurance, and UniMed (formerly Accuro) Health Insurance.
Depending on your specific insurance policy, you may be eligible to claim back the cost of your nutrition consultations. I recommend checking with your health insurance provider today to see what your policy covers.
How the Process Works
Verify Your Coverage
Contact your provider to confirm that your plan includes cover for a Registered Clinical Nutritionist.
Book & Attend Your Session(s)
Book the service or package that best suits your needs. Full payment is required at the time of your consultation.
Receive Your Receipt
After our session, I will issue you a formal receipt. This document contains all the essential details your insurer needs to process your claim.
Submit Your Claim
Upload your receipt to your insurer’s online portal or app. They will then reimburse you directly according to your policy’s limits.
Health Insurance FAQs
Are “Packages” covered by insurance?
Insurance providers generally cover the clinical consultation portion of a package. If you purchase a package, I can provide a receipt that identifies the consultation fees separately to assist with your claim.
Is the Online Text-Based Coaching covered?
Typically, insurance policies cover formal consultations (online or in-person). Ongoing text-based support or digital meal plans are usually not eligible for reimbursement under standard New Zealand health insurance plans.
What if my policy isn’t with Southern Cross, NIB, or UniMed (formerly Accuro)?
While these three providers formally recognise CNA, other insurers may offer “Wellbeing” or “Health Management” grants. It is always worth calling your provider to ask if they will accept a receipt from a Registered Clinical Nutritionist.
Can I claim for blood tests or diagnostic lab work?
The consultation fee for me to review your blood tests is usually claimable as part of your session. However, the actual cost of the laboratory tests themselves (if done privately through a lab like Awanui is often not covered under standard nutrition benefits. If your GP requests the tests however, they are typically free or covered under your medical diagnostic benefits. I am happy to provide a referral note to your GP if you’re wanting to do blood testing this way.
Are online consultations covered the same as in-person sessions?
Yes. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Southern Cross, NIB, and UniMed (formerly Accuro) recognise telehealth (online video consultations) as a valid form of clinical service, provided the practitioner is registered with a recognised body like Clinical Nutritionists Aotearoa (CNA).
Can I claim for my partner or children?
If your health insurance is a “Family Plan,” your dependants are often covered under the same wellbeing benefits. This is a great way to support your children’s nutrition or a partner’s health goals using your existing policy limits.
